What is a Dream Deferred?
Written By: Brandice Spencer
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to start my own business. Seriously, when I was a little girl, my mom would say I would walk around with a briefcase calling myself a "business woman". It was a dream. So, I got older and completely forgot about that dream. Graduated from college, joined the corporate world...hated it, then joined the non-profit world. Started a family and lived my life. It wasn't until the birth of my youngest child that I remembered the dream. Oh...the dream.
Once my daughter was born, I found myself being torn about going back to work. I dreaded it. I missed her so much. Not to mention we bought a new house and I now had a 45 minute commute in rush hour traffic (one way). I had some serious postpartum and decided that I needed something to help me deal with the pressures of balancing life and work again...with a new baby.
We decided there were two areas that we needed the most help. We hired a housekeeper to come in and clean every 3 weeks and we decided we'd try Hello Fresh to help us with meal prep. Y'all...I'm picky about my food. I LOVE food with a passion so I was not loving the idea of needing help in the kitchen, but it was a reality I had to accept. We did it. We ordered Hello Fresh.
Now, I have to admit the meals were tasty and different. But...there was something that I didn't like. COOKING! Listen, I needed help and the fact that we spent money to get ingredients shipped to our home that could potentially rot in my refrigerator was a no go. I was just so tired by the end of the day that I didn't want to cook at all. So I thought to myself, there has to be a better way. Then, I decided to make the better way.
SERVED was born. It was time to dream again. It took me a year to gain the courage to leave my job, spend all of my savings and start my own business. In October 2016 we officially launch My Served Meals.
My Served Meals is a fresh take on traditional frozen dinners. Our company provides a wide variety of delicious recipes prepared in small batches by co-founder Chef Curtis Bufford, vacuum sealed, then shipped frozen. They can last in the freezer for 6 to 8 months and last in the fridge for about 14 days and are ready in 10 minutes or less.
I am so proud that this small dream of mine is becoming a reality. We are currently trying to raise money through our Kickstarter campaign to help take this dream to another level but I want to share this. As moms, as women, sometimes we defer our dreams for a variety of "well meaning" reasons. Sometimes it's risky. Sometimes we just don't know what we want to do and sometimes we think it's just not the right time. Well...it's never going to be the right time. Its not going to be easy...but I promise you it'll be worth it.

How I Met The Author
A few months into dating Marcus, we both moved to Houston to start our Summer internships. He was so excited because he told me that "his sister" lived there. This confused me because as far as I knew, he was an only child. This was my introduction to Brandice Spencer (Lockett at the time). I feel so bad for Marcus because we quickly kicked him out of the picture... Brandice became "my sister". She is truly the friend that quickly becomes family because she is loyal, dependable, caring, loving, and you can always count on her to feed you when you're hungry (LOL... I'm greedy). Throughout our friendship , I have seen God take her higher and higher in all aspects of her life. To bring you this post today is an honor for me to show off my talented and amazing friend. I know that this is just the beginning of an amazing dream realized... you heard it here first. Thank you Brandice for reminding me that my dreams have been in the "Time Out" chair way too long... Deferred but never Deterred. Dreams Never Die!
If you are struggling to find balance in your life and, oh yeah, eat at the same time... give SERVED at try. Meal prep is not always easy and take out gets very expensive. Please let Brandice and her team help to make your life a bit easier... you won't be disappointed.
