Don’t Be SO Wigged Out... Rather Be “SEW” Wigged Out!

It’s amazing how God allows our childhood memories to be a setting stone in our Adulthood. As little girls, we all have gone through a phase of wanting to be grown before our time and in prepping for that anticipated adolescence stage, we often played “house.” Some of you know exactly what I’m referring to. I’m not sure if this generation has those play times or not, but back when I was in elementary school or before then, we played roles such as: “dress up”, “career woman”, “housewife”, “modeling”, etc., etc. I like others was so intrigued by women with long beautiful hair and even those with short beautiful hair. Although I had a head full of hair, I was determined to look like one of the models I’d seen either on TV or in magazine. I knew I wasn’t old enough to have one of those hairstyles without adding to or cutting off my own hair, so I asked my Mother if she would buy me a wig. I can’t remember to this day where my Mother got the wig from, but she got me a wig to wear. Back then around the 60’s, there weren’t too many little girls wanting to wear wigs, but I didn’t care I wanted to wear one.
One particular day of which I’ll never forget; my Mother took me and my siblings to visit my grandmother. On our visit that day, I decided I would sport my new hairdo. How proud and cute I thought I was. I wasn’t ashamed of wearing a wig at all; until the unthinkable happened. While we were outside playing, my youngest uncle decided he wanted to pull my wig off of me. OMG, what an embarrassing moment for me that was, outside in front of everyone outside playing. As soon as he pulled it off, I started crying and ran to tell my Mother. I was so mad at him! I eventually made it through the rest of my visit, but needless to say, he ruined my visit. My own hair was braided up so that I could wear the wig, but still the simple fact that my uncle had exposed me out in public.
Now fast forwarding to my adult stage, as most women experience with aging, perms that sometimes damage our hair and the loss of hair around the edges also due to physical challenges that accompany women who’ve had a hysterectomy (with a low balance of estrogen), I began to be embarrassed about my hair damage. I knew I needed to do something to fix this hair loss issue because I didn’t want to wear my own hair, due to the lack thereof. Although I wasn’t too happy about it, I began to purchase wigs to cover up this flaw. Even though I was pleased with the wig selections I had chosen, I was worried about people knowing that I was wearing a wig. I became SO WIGGED OUT about having to wear them….until the day when I became secure in wearing them. It took me a while but I was no longer concerned about what others thought. I learned that a lot of women wear wigs for various reasons other than having hair loss issues. Some wear them because it’s easier than dealing with their own hair, having the ability to have a multitude of hairstyles without costly hair salon fees, the ability to have a different shades of hair color without the possibility of damaging your own hair due to too many coloring applications, braids that cause breakage around the edges, so forth and so on. I can proudly say, due to technology these days that now enables women to wear wigs without some people being able to tell if you’re wearing one or if its’ your own hair. Human hair, half human/half synthetic, sew-ins, L-Parts, lace fronts, half wigs, they make them all yawl. They even have names for wigs now……..so many choices, so many options.
I recently attended a “Business Launching Party”, given by one of my God-Daughters, whose business name is where I got the title of my blog post; “Sew Wigged Out” and I was amazed at how many women in attendance that were wearing wigs. Of course the only way I knew who was wearing one was because I knew some of the women in attendance and knew that my God-Daughter (who also makes wigs) had made theirs. Such beautiful and secure women I saw there. My God-daughter is very gifted in what she does and I know that God is the source of her creativity. She not only does natural hair, but she makes wigs. God has blessed her business in such a way that some of her clients are professional athletes and famous women. God is the Creator and Top Designer of all things, so how can I debate or refute His creations. I even laugh now when I receive compliments on my hair; and I proudly tell people that it is a wig……technical name for them is “unit.” So if you ever get to a point in your life or perhaps you’re experiencing it now, where you have no choice but to wear one of these lovely creations, remember, don’t be “so wigged out” about it, rather allow yourself to enjoy the new you and get “sew wigged out” that others will be floored and amazed and wigged out at the NEW YOU!!

How I Met The Author
Avis "Mama Avis" Patterson is my second mother... literally she is my Mother-In-Law. It's crazy to think that 10 years ago this month, I had the pleasure of spending my first Thanksgiving with her as Marcus and I were quickly developing our new relationship. With a smile as big as her heart she quickly welcomed me into her world and so graciously shared her son with me. As you all can see by this post, she loves to laugh and make others laugh as well. There is never a dull moment with "Mama Avis" around. In the past 10 years, we have been through some really hard times together but the one thing that always remains is her ability to Laugh Out Loud... I swear the person that sent the first LOL in a text must have been sitting right next to her. I look forward to the memories that we will continue to make together as we take on each challenge with a smile.
